I am reminded of the song by Bonnie Tyler she released back in 1984. I was titled ‘Holding Out for a Hero’. Before and since then there has been many songs with the theme of us being in need of a hero.
In movies there is a lot of superhero movies. Men and women with above normal human abilities struggling and eventually overcoming what appears to be undefeatable forces that want to do us harm.
I have noticed in several television shows. The main character, aka the hero finds themselves in not only one difficult/hero making situation, but several situations. They are fighting against not only an evil villain but personal morals. They must do the right thing regardless of emotional pull to do to compromise in one or more situations, in addition to problems on the home front.
A prime example can be found in the long running television show NCIS. The pilot episode aired in 2003. It is in a record 19th season. Each week a different cast member struggles with real and Hollywood manufactured situations. Continuing past an episode being carried on through the entire season the characters overcome difficult odds doing the right thing. From there characters we can see some of our situations are not so sad. We can make it another week.
We can go back to before ancient Greek and Roman cultures were made up stories of gods and human heroes. Some were made up others were taken from real life experience. The stories were told over and over again. Some evolved into parables. Some of the most famous of these parables came Jesus a wondering preacher in Israel. Tall Tales of the American west are of more modern heroes. Today, we find created universes like the one Stan Lee created that inspire. James Bond is another kind of hero over coming near supernatural foes.
The enduring stories with our greatest heroes all contained elements we can apply to our lives. I could write a book or a whole series of blog posts about modern day heroes. But I want to know who your heroes are, and how they affect your life.
