Reginal Phillips – His Testimony

Hello, my name is Major Reginal Phillips, US Army Retired. I had a distinguish career in the Army. I graduated from West Point in the top three of my class, served in Vietnam and taught Military History at UC Berkeley. I retired from the Army to start a security service.

Mr. Roberts has been using pictures he took to discredit my years of service. A small portion of his story is true, but a large portion was twisted to make him look good. I want to take a moment of your time to set the record straight.

I first met Mr. Roberts when I was asked to meet him when he first got off the plane in South Vietnam. I escorted him to where my uncle General Moorehead was. The General had him assigned to Charlie Company Fourth Squad. I was their commanding officer.

Fourth Squad was known as C4 because it was known as a shit hole squad constantly making a mess. C4 was known for twisting orders to their benefit. Nothing serious enough for a court martial. When Mr. Roberts got assigned to the C4 all but one of its members were sergeants that got busted down to private.

I believe at the time Mr. Roberts held the rank of Corporal when I first met him. He had a reputation of causing trouble with the pictures he would take. He always put a spin on the pictures to fit his benefit.

After about ten months C4 lost its sergeant to enemy fire. Since Mr. Roberts was next in line, he automatically became squad leader. It was not a month later while on mission, then Sergeant Roberts was captured during the EVAC. The rest of C4 went back out to rescue Mr. Roberts expressly against my orders. After hearing anything for twenty-four hours I declared them deserters.

They resurfaced almost a month later just west of Saigon. I instructed the local MP detachment to take them into custody. I filled out all the paperwork to have them sent back to the states for full court martial. When I went to the stockade to give them the good news they were gone.

I still don’t understand General Moorehead, and Charlie Company were all gone. It was like none of them ever existed. I tried to ask question. I was told if I stopped asking questions, I would get my gold leaf, promoting to Major.
