I have learned every writer has a process that works best for them. I have found my process varies from writing on paper to typing on my computer. Still there is one consistent set of steps I follow.
I can describe my writing process to building a house starting from an empty lot. The empty lot is my initial idea. I go through five steps of building some might want to call edits. The finished product is a house that I want people to live in as they read.
Step #1 – The foundation is the idea. What I want as the starting point and what I want as the finishing point.
Step #2 – The frame consists of key points that I want to make in the journey from beginning to end. The studs and joints are the high points. The space between the studs in are low point
Step #3 – The drywall, electrical and plumbing – All these components represent what brings together the transition from one key point to another key point. Making sure comic relief, tension and some misdirection are place in the right places. Time wise this step takes longer than any other.
Step #4 – The Paint denotes tone of voice along with consistency from one chapter to the next.
Step #5 – Finally Nip and Tuck – Here changes are made from input from beta readers. Last minute changes can be from a sentence that doesn’t make sense to conflict in the story telling. The main goal is the written word giving the maximum impact.
