Marketing Parable
There was this farmer who had a problem with the mice in his barn. Every time he would get a cat and put it out in the barn, The cat would either run to the Farmers house or disappear. The farmer’s dog would just sit there and watch the mice eat the farmer’s grain.
One morning while standing on his front porch sipping his morning coffee. He looked out at his corn field. He noticed how effective his scare crow was keeping the birds away from his crops.
Before he finished his coffee, he went down to his workshop. He grabbed several pieces of scrap metal. He cut on some. He ground on the grinder. Then he wielded all those pieces together.
He put his creation in the barn in a place where it would overlook his grain. The next morning when he walked by the barn, he stopped and look inside. He didn’t see any signs of one mouse. For the next seven day, he went out to his barn. Each day there wasn’t a sign of signal mouse.
The farmers shared his invention with some of his farmer friends. They laughed at him. “How could a mouse made out of scrap metal could get rid of real mice?”
The farmers made a couple metal mice for his farmer friends. They were amazed how the metal mouse worked. They said he could make a million dollars from selling the metal mouse.
The farmer named his mouse Mike the Mighty Mouse. His farmer friends even liked the name.
The farmer’s wife set down at her computer. She searched Google for materials to make more of Mike the Mighty Mouse. She searched high and low to find where they could buy all the right materials in the quantity to make at least a thousand of Mike the Mighty Mouse.
The farmer found a local manufacture who would assemble a thousand Mike the Mighty Mice for him. The manager of the factory knew of a place where he could get some attractive packaging made. The local manufacture said he would even put Mike in the packaging for a penny a mouse.
A thousand Mighty Mice were made packaged and stored in a warehouse. The farmer paid his son to be his shipping clerk. At that point the farmer had not sold one mouse. The farmer gave Mike the Mighty Mouse to several family and a couple to factories manager.
One of the farmer’s friends took some neat pictures of Mike the Mighty Mouse They were in the package, outside of his package, and beside the package. He posted those pictures on Facebook and on Craigslist. The farmer got a whole lot of spam email and phone calls. He only sold five of Mike the Mighty Mouse.
The farmer was getting frustrated. He put all his savings into Mike the Mighty Mouse. He had a thousand of them setting in a warehouse with a shipping clerk waiting to ship them. It is all costing him money just sitting there.
The farmers friend named Paul was successful at network marketing suggested that he start going with him to some lead’s groups. In a month’s time he was going to four a week. In that second month, the farmer sold eight.
The farmer went to the local university and found Scott. Scott teaches marketing at the university. Scott suggested that the farmer would find local shops that sell gift items. Then talk the owner’s in putting Mike the Mighty Mouse in their store. The farmer found just one. That store didn’t sell any. The store owner told the farmer to take them back.
Six months passed. There was still over nine hundred Mike the Mighty Mouse sitting in the farmer’s warehouse. The farmer was headed for bankruptcy.
In desperation the farmer’s wife set down at her computer. She scrolled through the internet looking for help. She found this best-selling author. He talked about how he markets his books. He publishes two books a year. At least one book each year ends up on the best-seller list.
He suggested finding a distributor. Build a working relationship with that distributor. Most distributors have several salespeople. They can get Mike the Mighty Mouse in far more stores than the farmer could visit. The distributor made arrangements for farmer to visit the stores and the corporate offices.
So the farmer went on the road with the back of his truck full of Mike the Mighty Mouse. He went from trade show to craft’s fair. He pitched Mike the Mighty Mouse to anyone who would listen.
It has been a year. The farmer is on the second production run of Mike the Mighty Mouse. His warehouse is empty. He has several back orders. Mike the Mighty Mouse even had his own YouTube channel, there people using Mike the Mighty Mouse in their Tik Tock videos.
